Cross-disciplinary creative director blending film, design, photography, and systemic thinking into coherent visual narratives.
Gail Malbete is a French creative director working across film, graphic design, photography, and visual communication. His multidisciplinary background has led him to develop an agile and transversal approach to creative direction, grounded in adaptability, systemic thinking, and the ability to design coherent responses within complex and evolving environments.
Working across cultural, institutional, artistic, and development-related contexts, he has built a practice centered on the articulation of multiple fields of expertise — combining visual identity, storytelling, image-making, sound, and strategic thinking into unified creative systems. His work is driven by a strong sensitivity to human and cultural contexts, allowing him to navigate diverse projects while maintaining conceptual coherence and visual clarity.
Over the years, he has collaborated with institutions such as Université Lumière Lyon 2, contributing to the redesign of visual identities and communication systems, as well as with organizations involved in international development and environmental issues, including Nitidæ and IED.
As a film maker, he notably directed Les Saisons Obstinées, a documentary focused on the world of winemaking, following over the course of a year the work of winegrowers in the Côte roannaise region. He is also associated with the feature-length documentary Tiou Dou Goun – Tomorrow’s Village, which has been selected for several international film festivals, including Amnesty International Film Festival, COLIFFE festival and Lift-Off International Film Festival to name a few.
Last but not least, a strong sense of commitment to transmission has led him to teach art direction and graphic design to young creatives in higher education context as design schools for the last decade, further expanding the scope of his expertise to learning design and design thinking.
Whether working on a film, a visual identity system, a photographic series, or a communication strategy, Gail Malbete approaches each project as an interconnected ecosystem where form, meaning, context, and usage must align.
Through this hybrid practice, he develops a vision of creative direction as both a strategic and sensitive discipline — capable of connecting aesthetics, systems, and human realities to produce meaningful and adaptable creative solutions.
